‘La Pergola’ is a family run business that prides itself on serving quality authentic Italian food in a relaxed and family friendly environment. Based at The Wheatsheaf, a former Coaching Inn that dates back to the 15th Century, La Pergola is surrounded by beautiful countryside.
Proprietor, Giulio De Simone, originates from a small village close to the coastal town of Sorrento in Southern Italy. Having been involved in various Restaurant ventures around Cambridge, Giulio’s ambition was to create an Italian Pizzeria and Restaurant. In August 2007 La Pergola opened it’s doors to their first diners. Today the Restaurant is managed by Giulio’s daughter, Rosa and her husband, Domenico, while Giulio’s son Tony runs the adjoining Pub, ‘The Wheatsheaf’.
The emphasis at La Pergola is on going back to Giulio, and his wife Maria’s, Italian roots. As well as using good quality ingredients sourced from Italy, most of the items on the menu are home made, such as, the bread, pork and fennel sausages, the antipasti pickles, and the sauces used in the Pasta dishes. The allotment that adjoins the Restaurant is cultivated by the family and from Spring through to late Autumn many of the vegetables, herbs and salad produce used in the kitchen is home grown. As well as the vegetables that are cultivated on the allotment the land is also home to a brood of hens – so where possible free range eggs are used in the restaurant dishes. The wild mushrooms are picked locally, but the exact location is a closely guarded secret!
La Pergola has a wood burning pizza oven in – the pizzas have a distinctive taste that is only achieved in a clay oven. The pizza dough is made fresh every morning and Pizzas are available every lunch time and evening, either to eat in, or takeaway.
La Pergola is also open for Lunch from Tuesday to Sunday (12 – 2.30pm). At lunch time Diners can chose from a range of Traditional Italian and British dishes. Dinner is served from Tuesday to Saturday Evening from 6pm to 9pm. Children are welcome at all times and large parties and events can be catered for.
